ReplayR for archery and target sports

TL;DR. You cannot watch a screen while you are at full draw, and you should not be walking back to a phone between arrows either. Mount it once, start the buffer, shoot. After the arrow lands, a tap on your watch writes the last 45 seconds to disk, and you carry on. Between ends you step through the release one frame at a time, or drop a straight line on the anchor frame to check cant. Nothing uploads, nothing needs signal, and the buffer costs the same storage at arrow one and arrow two hundred.

Why target sports film differently

Most sports video advice is written for something with an opponent in it. A rally, a possession, a passage of play: two people react to each other, the interesting thing is unpredictable, and the reason you film is to find out what happened. Archery, bowling, pool, air pistol and darts are not that. One person repeats one motion, the motion is roughly the same every time by design, and you already know what happened because you watched the arrow land.

That changes what the camera is for. You are not capturing an event, you are sampling a repeated one and comparing samples. Three things follow from it, and they are what the rest of this page is built around.

The review point is between shots

Not at half time, not after the session. You have twenty to sixty seconds of dead time between arrows or frames, and that is the only window where a correction still connects to the feeling you just had. Video that arrives that evening is a different, weaker exercise.

You cannot look at a screen mid-execution

A delayed mirror works for a dance phrase because you can glance sideways. At full draw you cannot, and in bowling your eyes are on the arrows down the lane. So the trigger to save has to happen after the shot is over, and it has to not require a walk.

The stance is the whole point

Because the motion repeats, small drift matters more than in open play. A bow arm dropping two centimetres over an end, or a bowling approach creeping a board left, is invisible from the inside and obvious from three metres side-on.

Setup, discipline by discipline

Camera position is the one thing worth being fussy about. Everything else forgives a rough setup; a badly placed lens gives you footage where the fault is behind your own body.

Archery, recurve and compound

  • Side-on: 3 to 4 m out, lens level with your bow hand, perpendicular to the shooting line. This is the angle for draw length, anchor consistency, bow arm collapse and the direction the release sends your hand.
  • From behind: on the line, low enough to sit under the neighbouring archer's sight, framing head to hip. This is the angle for string picture, bow cant, shoulder alignment and whether the follow-through goes straight back or sideways.
  • Buffer: 45 s per arrow, 90 s for an end of three.
  • Save: watch tap as the arrow lands, before you lower the bow.
  • Watch for: range rules on tripods and on anything pointing down the field. Ask the field captain, and keep the phone out of the lane.

Ten-pin bowling

  • Position: behind and slightly to your non-bowling side, 3 m back, so the approach walks away from the lens and the slide, release and follow-through all stay in frame.
  • Second angle: side-on at the foul line for timing between the ball reaching the bottom of the swing and the slide foot planting.
  • Buffer: 45 s covers the whole approach from the moment you pick the ball off the rack.
  • Save: after the pins fall, when you turn round. That is the natural gesture point and the buffer still holds the delivery.
  • Watch for: centre lighting is dim and the ball is fast. Step the capture resolution up and expect to rely on slow motion rather than the naked eye.

Pool, snooker and billiards

  • Position: table height, at the far end of the shot line, so the cue comes towards the lens. That is the only angle that shows a stroke wandering off line.
  • Second angle: side-on, level with the table bed, for bridge stability, elbow drop and whether the head lifts on delivery.
  • Buffer: 45 s from walking round the table to the ball dropping.
  • Save: the shot you missed and the one you were unsure of. A potted ball with a bad stroke behind it is the most useful clip on this list.
  • Watch for: low, hard overhead lights blow out the cloth. Frame slightly off the light rather than under it.

Air pistol, air rifle and darts

  • Position: side-on at 2 to 3 m, framing shoulder to hand. These motions are small, so get close enough that the hand is a real part of the frame rather than a detail in the corner.
  • Buffer: 45 s for a single shot, 90 s for a three-dart throw or a five-shot string.
  • What it shows: arm settle before the release, the hold, and any movement at the exact moment of release. Also the thing nobody sees in themselves, how long the position is held afterwards.
  • Save: palm gesture works well here because your hand is already up and the lens is close.

A single shot needs a short window. The reason to go longer is a routine you want intact, the walk to the line and the settle included, because that is often where the fault actually starts. Saving without breaking the routine

The reason most people give up on filming their own form is not the camera, it is the walk. Twenty steps to the phone and twenty back, after every attempt, and by the sixth one you have stopped bothering. Precision sports make it worse, because the walk breaks exactly the rhythm you were trying to measure. Two triggers remove it.

Wear OS, one tap, free tier

A Tile or a watch-face Complication saves the last window in a few hundred milliseconds. You do it as the arrow lands, or as you turn back from the foul line, without moving your feet. The watch also starts and ends the session and changes clip duration, so a whole practice runs from your wrist. The link is Bluetooth, which means an indoor range with no usable network behaves identically to an outdoor field.

Open palm, Pro unlock

Hold a flat open hand towards the lens for a moment and the clip writes itself. Nothing is touched, which matters when both hands have just been on equipment and you would rather not put a bow down or set a cue against the table. It fires from a distance, so it works from the shooting line with the phone on its tripod.

One more thing that matters over a long indoor session: stealth mode blacks the screen out while the buffer runs. A phone showing a bright live preview two metres from the line is a distraction for you and for whoever is shooting next to you, and it drains the battery for a picture nobody is watching. Black screen, buffer running, watch still working.

What to actually look at, one frame at a time

Slow-motion playback and the trim editor are on the free tier and handle the between-ends look. Watching a release at quarter speed already tells you more than a coach standing behind you can describe in a sentence, because the moment you care about lasts about a tenth of a second and normal playback shows it as one blurred frame.

Archery, the three frames worth finding

  • Anchor: hand position against the face, string alignment, shoulder line level or dropped.
  • Release, plus one: the single frame after the string goes. Where the drawing hand ends up is the honest record of whether the release was live or plucked.
  • Follow-through, plus ten: bow arm still up or already falling. Most collapse happens before the arrow lands and it never feels like it did.

Bowling, pool and pistol

  • Bowling: the frame where the slide foot plants against the frame where the ball passes the ankle. Timing, in one comparison.
  • Pool: the frame at the back of the final backswing and the frame at contact. If the cue tip is on a different line in the two, the stroke is steering.
  • Pistol and darts: the frame before release and the frame after. Any visible movement between them is the whole problem.

Alignment lines on a still frame

A repeated stance is best judged against a straight edge, and nothing in the environment gives you one. On Pro, once the analyzer is on the frame you want, tap Annotate frame and draw on it: freehand, straight lines and short text labels, four colours and three sizes, undo and clear-all. A vertical down the limb of the bow reads cant immediately. A horizontal across the shoulders shows whether the bow shoulder has crept up. In bowling, a vertical at the slide foot against the same vertical from last week says whether your approach has drifted a board. In pool, a straight line along the intended shot line shows a stroke coming across it.

Worth being exact about what this is: you draw on a frame, not on the moving clip, and the marks do not track motion the way broadcast telestration does. The export is one flattened image at the clip's full recording quality, so the line is part of the picture and looks the same wherever you send it. The useful habit that comes out of this: export the same frame every week. Anchor frame, week one. Anchor frame, week six, same angle, same line drawn on it. Two images side by side settle an argument about whether anything actually changed, which is otherwise a matter of opinion between you and whoever is coaching you.

Indoor ranges, lanes and club rooms

Distance beats resolution

Two metres at 480p shows more about a hand position than eight metres at 4K, because the subject fills the frame instead of occupying a corner of it. Get the phone close first, then raise the resolution if the venue is dim. Pro goes to 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K or 8K depending on the device; free capture tops out at 480p, which is genuinely enough for a side-on stance check at three metres.

No signal, no account, no upload

Indoor ranges and bowling centres are reliably bad for mobile data. Nothing here needs it. Clips stay on the phone, the watch link is Bluetooth, and there is no login screen between you and the buffer. See filming with no signal or Wi-Fi.

Other people in frame

Shooting lines and lanes are shared. Frame tight on your own position rather than wide across the venue, which keeps neighbours out of shot as a side effect and gives you a better picture anyway. A session does not fill the phone

The buffer holds a fixed window and overwrites itself, so three hours costs what ten minutes costs. Only kept clips accumulate, and the swipe review at the end sends the rest to a bin with a 24-hour recovery window in case you were too quick.

A practice session that works

Filming everything is the fastest way to end up reviewing nothing. A repeated motion generates a hundred near-identical clips per session, and a hundred clips is a folder you never open. Sample instead.

Save

  • The first shot of the session, before you have warmed into anything
  • Your best shot and your worst shot of each round, saved back to back so the pair is comparable
  • Any shot that scored well but felt wrong, which is the one your body is about to learn
  • One deliberate reference shot per week, same angle, same distance, for the long comparison

Let it scroll

  • Shots identical to one you already kept this session
  • Anything shot while you were fatigued at the end of a long round, unless fatigue is what you are studying
  • Warm-up ends
  • Anything you would not look at again tonight

Two or three clips per session, reviewed properly between ends and compared week to week, beat forty clips reviewed never. And because saving is a wrist tap, the cost of following that rule is close to zero, which is the only reason anyone keeps it up past the second week.

Sharing a frame with a coach

Most target-sports coaching happens between people who are not standing next to each other. A club coach sees you fortnightly; the drift happens in between. What travels well is a single annotated still, not a video file: it opens instantly on any phone, costs a few hundred kilobytes rather than thirty megabytes, survives being forwarded, and does not ask the recipient to install anything.

FAQ

Can I check my archery form between arrows without touching the phone?

Yes. Mount the phone, start the buffer once, and leave it. After the arrow lands you save the last window with a tap on a paired Wear OS watch, or by holding an open palm towards the lens on Pro. The phone stays on the tripod for the whole end, and you review while you walk to the target or during the next scoring break.

What buffer length should an archer use?

45 seconds for a single arrow, which covers setup, draw, anchor, release and follow-through with room to spare. 90 seconds holds an end of three. A six-arrow end at a relaxed pace can pass three minutes, which is a Pro buffer. Both 45 and 90 seconds are on the free tier.

Where should the phone go for an archery form check?

Two positions cover almost everything. Side-on, level with your bow arm and three to four metres away, shows draw length, anchor point and bow arm collapse. From directly behind, on the shooting line and out of the neighbouring lane, shows string alignment, bow cant and where the follow-through sends your drawing hand. Alternate between them across a session rather than trying to see both from one angle.

Can I put an alignment line on a frame?

On Pro, yes, on a still frame rather than as a live overlay. Does it work indoors at a range or a bowling centre?

It records whatever the phone camera sees, and indoor venues are mostly a lighting and distance problem rather than a software one. Keep the phone within four metres so the subject fills the frame, avoid pointing it straight into ceiling lights, and step up the capture resolution if the lane is dim. Everything is on-device with no upload, so a venue with no usable Wi-Fi changes nothing.

Will it fill my phone if I leave it running all session?

No. The buffer occupies a fixed amount of storage and overwrites its own oldest frames, so a three-hour session costs the same space as a ten-minute one. Only the clips you deliberately keep accumulate, and the review screen swipes them away right after the session.
