Where the signal actually dies
Coaching happens in buildings and on ground that were never designed with mobile reception in mind. The pattern repeats across sports, and it is worth knowing which of these you are walking into before you plan the session.
Ice rinks
Steel roof structure, thick insulation and refrigeration plant sit between you and the nearest mast. Reception at the boards is usually one bar or none, and the venue Wi-Fi is typically an access point in the lobby that does not carry to the far blue line. Hockey coaches hit this every session.
Rural pitches and grass parks
Youth football, rugby and cricket happen on fields two villages from the nearest cell site. There may be a signal at the car park and nothing at the far touchline. Uploading a 200 MB clip on one bar of 3G takes longer than the drill you filmed.
Basement gyms and dojos
Weight rooms and martial arts halls are often below ground level in concrete. The building has Wi-Fi somewhere, but it belongs to the front desk and the password changes monthly.
Pools and indoor courts
Large steel-frame halls with a lot of glass and water behave badly for reception, and many pools ask you to keep phones out of the water zone entirely, which rules out any workflow that needs you to touch the screen mid-set.
Why cloud analysis apps stall off-grid
Most video analysis products are built around a server. That is fine on a Wi-Fi campus and a real problem on a cold Tuesday morning at the rink. Three failure modes come up again and again.
The login check on launch
Subscription tools validate an account token when they start. If the token has expired and there is no connection to refresh it, the app can drop you on a sign-in screen you cannot get past. You are standing on the ice holding a phone that will not open a camera you already paid for.
Upload before you can annotate
Team platforms want the footage in the library before the drawing tools unlock. With no bandwidth, the clip sits in a queue and review never happens in the session. Feedback that arrives that evening is worth a fraction of feedback given while the athlete still remembers the feel of the rep.
Background sync eating the battery
A sync queue with no network keeps retrying. Each attempt wakes the radio, and the radio scanning for a mast it cannot find is one of the most expensive things a phone can do. You lose charge to work that will never complete.
On-device capture removes all three. There is no account to validate, no queue to drain, and nothing waiting to sync. ReplayR behaves in airplane mode exactly the way it behaves on a fibre connection, because it never had a server in the loop.

The distinction that matters: capture and review are local, distribution is the only step that may need a network, and even that has a peer-to-peer route. Nothing in the session itself waits on connectivity.
Setting up before you lose signal
01 Rehearse in airplane mode at home
This is the single most useful ten seconds you will spend. Turn on airplane mode, force-close the app, reopen it, record something, save it, play it back. Anything that asks for a connection will show itself here rather than at the rink. If the app passes this test it will pass at the venue.
02 Choose buffer length and resolution deliberately
Buffer length decides whether the whole drill fits before you save. Resolution decides how much battery and storage the session costs. The free tier holds the last 45 seconds, which covers a lift, a serve, a shot or a single skill rep. Pro extends to 12 minutes for a full shift, a routine or a sparring round. 03 Switch to airplane mode on arrival
If there is no usable network, the radios are pure cost. A phone hunting for a mast in a marginal-coverage building draws roughly 100 to 300 mW more than one with the radios off. Airplane mode also stops notifications from pulling focus while the camera is buffering, which matters when the phone is clamped to a fence and you are 20 metres away.
04 Pair the watch before airplane mode, not after
The Wear OS link runs on Bluetooth, which survives airplane mode on most phones, though airplane mode switches Bluetooth off by default. Turn Bluetooth back on after enabling airplane mode and confirm the watch still triggers a save. Do that check once at home and it becomes muscle memory.
05 Clear space the night before
With no cloud offload during the day, every clip you keep lives on the phone until you get home. Delete last week's saves, empty the recently-deleted folder, and give yourself a few gigabytes of headroom. A phone that runs out of storage mid-tournament fails silently at the worst moment.
Power planning for a long off-grid session
A rolling buffer holds the camera open for the whole session, so battery is the real constraint, not storage. These are the numbers worth memorising.
Resolution is the biggest lever
1080p draws roughly 800 to 1,100 mW. 4K draws roughly 1,800 to 2,500 mW. A 4,000 mAh phone that lasts about 3.5 hours at 1080p lasts 1.5 to 2 hours at 4K. For technique review, 1080p60 beats 4K30 almost every time, because frame rate is what keeps slow motion readable.
Stealth mode is nearly free range
A bright OLED panel draws 800 to 1,200 mW on its own, which can rival the camera. Stealth mode keeps the screen black while the buffer runs and adds roughly 25 to 40 percent to run time. On anything over two hours it is the most effective single change you can make.
One power bank covers the day
A 10,000 mAh bank at 18 to 20W roughly doubles or triples usable recording time. Look for pass-through charging at 15W or more so the phone gains charge while it films rather than just draining slower. Cold rinks also cut battery capacity, so bring the bank even for sessions you think are short.

During the session
Save from where you stand
A tap on the watch or an open palm to the camera writes the seconds leading up to the trigger. Both work with the radios off. This is what keeps you coaching instead of walking back to a tripod between reps, and it is the difference between a system you use every week and one you abandon after two sessions.
Review at the boards, not at home
Playback comes off local storage, so it starts instantly. Call the athlete over, scrub the rep at 0.25×, name one change, send them back. The whole loop takes under a minute and needs nothing from a network.
Keep less than you think
With no cloud to absorb the volume, discipline pays. Save the reps that show something. A folder of 12 meaningful clips is more useful in the drive home than 90 files you will never open, and it leaves storage for the second session.
Watch for heat, not just charge
Continuous capture warms the phone, and a hot phone throttles the camera. In a rink that is rarely an issue. On a July pitch, keep the phone out of direct sun and take the case off if it starts to feel hot to the touch.
Getting clips off the phone afterwards
Distribution is the one step people assume needs the internet. Two of the three routes do not.
Peer-to-peer, still at the venue
Quick Share on Android and AirDrop on iPhone find the other device over Bluetooth, then open a direct Wi-Fi link between the two phones to move the file. No router, no account, no upload. Hold the phones near each other, pick the target, the athlete accepts, done. A 30 second 1080p clip transfers in a few seconds.
USB-C cable to a laptop
If you are building a season archive, a cable is faster than any wireless method and works in a car park. Copy the folder, then clear the phone for tomorrow.
Messaging apps, once you are back in coverage
WhatsApp or Signal to an individual athlete works fine on the drive home. Do it deliberately, for the clips you chose, rather than letting a platform sync everything by default. That distinction matters most with under-18 athletes, where the fewer copies of a minor's footage that exist on someone else's server, the better. There is more on that in the recording ethics guide.
A pre-session checklist
- App opens, records, saves and plays back with airplane mode on. Verified at home, not assumed.
- Buffer length matches the longest thing you want to capture in one save.
- Resolution set to 1080p60 unless you have a specific reason for 4K.
- At least 5 GB of free storage, more for a tournament day.
- Phone above 80 percent, power bank charged and in the bag with the right cable.
- Watch paired and a test save confirmed, with Bluetooth left on under airplane mode.
- Tripod or clamp packed, plus something to weigh it down if it is windy.
- Stealth mode on for anything over two hours.

Is there a video analysis app that works with no internet?

Why do cloud coaching apps fail in an ice rink?
